Chapter 11

Now

Whatever Isabella had going on here was worthy of an Oscar. I looked around the room. Maybe not an Oscar, but at least a Golden Globe.

The room was lit just so. I strode in ready to take my seat at the head of the table, but Isabella was already in it, lifted up so that she would be half a head taller than anyone else who took a seat. I maneuvered to the other end of the table. It was still a power position from which I could keep my eyes on Bella.

The rest of the executives filed in one by one, taking seats around the table. It was going to be a full house. My own assistant, who I hadn’t thought to contact, rolled back in a seat behind mine. She was good at anticipating my needs like that. She definitely earned points for that one.

Once everyone was done shifting, Bella cleared her throat.

“Gentlemen.” Oh so effectively, she paused. Even though they’d probably deny it, each of the men shifted a millimeter forward in their seats, anticipation tightening their jaws.

“Gentlemen, good morning. In a moment, Alexandra Hughes, my assistant, is going to pass out a memo I’ve put together outlining the steps this department is going to take to mitigate the damage Revival’s bass player, Indigo Hawk, known as Blue, has done to the network’s reputation, as well as what we’re going to do differently going forward to assure nothing like this ever happens again.”

Bella paused. A long pause. I had to sit back in my seat in admiration. She really had nerves of steel. Almost anyone, even the most seasoned executive, probably would have withered under the scrutiny of the network brass. But she wasn’t at all. She shook her head as if waving away a pesky fly.

“I’ve taken the liberty,” she continued, “of putting together a short visual presentation that will put last night’s performance in context.”

Like we were in a theater, the room went nearly black. Then light flashed behind me. I had to swivel in my chair to take in the screen that emerged from behind wood-paneled doors. My assistant quickly ducked and took to the floor so her head wasn’t blocking the screen. Isabella really had taken the seat of power.

I wasn’t too close to appreciate the super-slick presentation that flashed across the screen.

Every bad word and every flash of skin was on display. It reminded me of my first year in America. That first year without Isabella to guide me. I thought I’d never get rid of my boner with the constant sex on display. There had been nothing like that in China. Culture shock hadn’t really described it. It was as if my contraband manga had come to life.

The executives around the table didn’t bat an eyelash. Instead there was nodding, some in self-satisfaction at the envelope-pushing scenes from CBT itself. Then, after all the more-or-less salacious content, was the flash of Blue’s penis. It was amazing how that bit of skin looked like nothing when compared to the ten-minute skin fest we’d all just watched.
